Handing on the power to students: threatening educators?

Traditionally, teachers have been preaching from their soap box about what students need to learn. Some assumptions underlying this practice are:

  • Learning is a unidirectional process of acquiring objective truths
  • Knowledge is a static set of truths that must be grasped by students
  • Learning is not an option but an imposition
  • Teachers hold the truth (s) to be attained
  • Students are empty vessels Continue reading

A “revolution” in Chilean Education?

The current administration mentioned there would be a revolution in Education (2010). Little did they know since, yes, there is a revolution in progress yet not coming from their ministry and their public polices but from the students themselves! (2011). Watch for yourself / comment / share.

This will be a great new academic year

As I hear the seagulls and see people enjoying their last few vacation days, I wonder how my soon-to-be students must be feeling like. Probably many of them are a bit anxious about their college start, some must be feeling quite excited, and I hope only a few or nobody really feels sad or sick about it.

This year looks busy all the way through, academically & professionally speaking. I will start 2 research projects, plus ICT is finally picking up at our school and I happen to coordinate that area. Plus, I’ll teach first year students! I feel really happy about all what’s in store. Along with my school work, also at the consulting firm I work for we’re launching new projects and I’ll be working in a way that allows me this year to have some “me-time”!! so much needed after all I went through health-wise last year.

On a more personal note, my family is again up against a hard time. I won’t go into details but well, those who know me and my parents know what I’m talking about.

What do I wish for?
Faith & hope above all and under every single circumstance that rises; passion and enthusiasm to think and learn; resilience to withstand the “bumps in the road” (quite a euphemism, I know); happiness and intelligence to seize every single moment as if there were nothing more important than the here and now.

All the best my dear students, colleagues, friends and everyone reading this site.
Mauricio.
